i know it's been forever!

i've just had SO much on, and haven't felt the inspiration to write.

things are good though - i've finished the final draft of my thesis (65,000 words) and at the moment it's being read by some people for feedback before i submit it for examination. so it's off my back for the time being, which is a very welcome relief.

i recently went to south africa for a conference trip, if you're interested you can check out some pics here. i have mixed feelings about my trip. i got some great professional feedback on my work, and the scenery and nature aspects of that part of africa are so stunning... BUT there's this constant underlying issue of crime. you really can't walk around anywhere without feeling in some degree of danger. we're talking muggings, car jackings, pickpockets, ATM scams - the last i experienced first-hand as two guys tried to bamboozle me at the ATM, taking my card and trying to get me to tell them my PIN. i gave them a fake PIN and got the hell outta there, narrowly escaping being robbed and the threat of physical harm. very scary. it filled me with sadness (after the shock/fear faded away) for such a beautiful country with such a shocking recent history (and a nearly-as-bad present)...

there was a little girl
who had a little curl
right in the middle
of her forehead

and when she was good
she was very, very good
and when she was bad
she was horrid

state voting day today.

i am so lame.

while lining up to get my ballots, i got all choked up. now, i am not nationalistic/patriotic or anything in the slightest, but for some reason the act of participating in democracy (at least, what they're posing as democracy these days) makes me well up with pride. while i make and study performance that tries to change people politically, deep down i know that at the end of the day, this is the only thing that counts: actually voting. and although it's compulsory to vote (a great thing), i still get this overwhelming emotional pride when i'm actually doing the deed.

so lame...

new tattoo [Feb. 13th, 2007|01:32 pm]
i bought a few items of clothing, souvenirs etc while in new zealand. but i'd have to say my favourite new purchase was my new tattoo (excuse the red and ripe-ness of brand new ink... the scab hasn't even come off yet!):

ok, this is my first experience with flickr, so i hope i did it right! it's certainly quicker than msn groups, which is what i have been using. i hope this link works out ok, let me know if it doesn't. i didn't really know which page to link to.

anyway, without further ado...
